What personal characteristics define an excellent administrator?
I believe that an excellent administrator is defined by the connection between his/her words and actions. School administrators must possess the skills to motivate a vast array of people towards a common purpose, that of educating children. The ability to motivate people comes through building a collaborative culture around teaching and learning. A collaborative culture requires an environment where ideas and input are encouraged from all levels of the system, including students, parents and community.

Rebecca Midles has been involved with Highland Tech High School since the opening. Her hope and desire is for students to gain the tools and confidence to achieve a life that is not shaped by limitations, but is instead defined by the pursuit of personal interests and acquisition of personal goals.

Laura began her love for teaching at the young age of 18 when she taught a tap class in Athens, Georgia as a summer job, and since then, has enjoyed every inch of the path in teaching. With degrees from the University of Georgia, the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and the University of Alaska-Anchorage, she can still say with confidence that her best teachers are her students. She hopes to pass onto her students that expression is the key to life, whether that is through writing, reading, drawing, or drumming. In the end, if we are practicing expression, we are learning about ourselves, and influencing the world around us. It is also her hope that Highland Tech becomes a systemic model for educational reform because when the system is broken, the system must evolve. Outside of teaching and practicing Language Arts, she enjoys travel, skiing, biking, exercising, and hanging with her cat Misty.
