The near future

November 19th, 2009 No Comments

Just wanted to lay out what the near future has in store for the class.  We are starting a skills review unit.  Starting with fractions, decimals and fractions.  Students will be reviewing basic computation and reasoning skills.  Then we will be moving into a financial literacy unit, taking a look at checking, and savings accounts, credit cards, taxes, loans, and other topics in the financial world.  This will take us right up to intensives in January.

This week’s work will have you developing an essay that offers an answer to the question “Why do we need this math?”  You should write at least a 5 paragraph essay that includes 3 reasons.  Those reasons need to be developed and not just stated.  B day classes will be due 11-17-09, A day classes will be due 11-18-09.

What’s the plexer

October 19th, 2009 No Comments

This week we will begin stretching your minds to start class with plexers.   A plexer is a word puzzle where words are made into a picture that stands for an expression or saying. For example:

You will be working on some problems that will require your focus and attention to detail.  As we are half way through the first semester spend some time thinking about how you are doing in math class.  What could I do to help if you are not progressing at a rate to meet your goals?

Study System

Today we will be breaking up into groups and looking at a study system.  You will be making posters and presenting on your topic.  We will be using the A.S.P.I.R.E study system here is the link.

Today you will need to link to these sites and go through the activities on reading graphs and charts.  Don’t forget that you should be turning in one problem that has been worked through using the KNWS strategy, and hopefully you have been looking for a problem to try to “stump the teacher!”  The only catch is that you should know the solution and be able to explain it to me if I am stumped.

Problem organizer

October 5th, 2009 No Comments

This week we will continue to look at organizing our thoughts to solve problems.  Using an organizational tool I am hoping students see the importance and relative ease of taking a math problem and breaking it down into the important parts.  With this I hope students see that wordy math problems are nothing more than a group of smaller, simpler computation tasks.  knws-organizer
