We all know that what you eat makes a difference on your mood and how much energy you have to get through the day. Many teens resort to ‘quick fixes’, using energy boosters or something you can easily eat or drink to give you lots of energy fast, without stopping to consider the long-term affect this has on your body.
In this standard, you are asked to stop and pause; thinking about nutrition, your body’s sexual development; and possible substance abuses.
PSS SL.HL 3.03 Investigates the emotional and physical changes related to positive and negative nutritional issues (i.e., eating disorders)
PROFICIENT = * Describes feelings that surface after making nutritional choices
* Identifies characteristics of emotional intelligence development with regards to sexual maturity
* Investigates life changes that stem from substance abuse

The Cold War was born in the uneasy World War II alliances between the Soviet Union and democratic nations. After the war, the struggle between democracy and communism led to a long war of ideas with occasional outbreaks of fighting. At the end of World War II, tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States deepened, leading to an era known as the Cold War. Following the end of World War II, U.S. military forces— and the rest of the country—faced the challenge of returning to life during peacetime. The start of the Cold War and events at home helped trigger a second Red Scare in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Cold War tensions finally erupted in a shooting war in 1950. The United States confronted a difficult challenge defending freedom halfway around the world.

So much of what is surrounding us in Alaska has been here a LONG, LONG time, and yet, we tend to take much for granted. How did people come to Alaska, and why? How long have we been here? What are the beliefs of the original inhabitants? How can we show respect and empathy for each others’ cultures in sincere ways that build up our state and people? In this unit, we will be looking at the indigenous cultures of Alaska in order to better understand their background and find ways we can all work and live together.
